Medication Management

For many individuals, medication can be an essential part of the recovery process. At River City Recovery, we offer comprehensive medication management services as part of our integrated treatment approach. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, or cravings associated with substance use, our medical team is here to help you determine if medication could support your healing, and, if so, how to use it safely and effectively.

We don’t believe medication is a “magic bullet.” But we also don’t believe people should suffer unnecessarily when evidence-based medical support is available. Our approach to medication management is thoughtful, individualized, and always grounded in collaboration between the client and our medical team.

Who Is Medication Management For?

Medication management may be appropriate for individuals who are:

  • Struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic, or PTSD
  • Experiencing mood instability or difficulty regulating emotions
  • Dealing with intense cravings or obsessive thoughts related to substance use
  • Requiring support for sleep, focus, or stabilization during early recovery
  • Diagnosed with co-occurring psychiatric conditions
  • Recently discharged from residential or psychiatric hospitalization and in need of continued medication oversight

You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from psychiatric support. In many cases, carefully prescribed and monitored medications can help create the internal stability needed to fully engage in therapy, group work, and long-term recovery.

Types of Medications We May Use

We offer a range of medications that may be appropriate for individuals in recovery, including:

Antidepressants

(e.g., SSRIs, SNRIs) for mood disorders

Anti-anxiety medications

(non-narcotic) for generalized anxiety or panic

Mood stabilizers

for individuals with bipolar disorder or emotional volatility

Non-stimulant ADHD medications

(where clinically appropriate)

Anti-craving medications

for substance use (e.g., naltrexone, Vivitrol)

Sleep aids

(non-habit-forming) to support rest during early stabilization

We do not prescribe benzodiazepines or stimulant medications with high potential for abuse unless under strict medical necessity, and, even then, only with clear safeguards and oversight in place.

How Our Process Works

At River City Recovery, medication is never prescribed lightly. Every client who engages in medication management will undergo a full psychiatric evaluation with our Medical Director or licensed prescriber. This assessment includes a review of:

  • Personal and family mental health history
  • Substance use patterns
  • Current symptoms and functioning
  • Previous experiences with medications
  • Risk factors and medical considerations

If medication is indicated, our provider will offer recommendations and walk you through options in plain, understandable language. We believe informed consent is essential; clients are never pressured, rushed, or treated as passive recipients of care.

Ongoing Monitoring and Support

Once a client begins medication, our team provides:

  • Regular follow-up appointments to assess effectiveness and side effects
  • Coordination with therapists and case managers to align treatment goals
  • Communication with outside providers (with consent) to ensure continuity of care
  • Medication adjustments as needed over time

Clients are never “set and forgotten.” Our providers remain actively involved in your care and are available for check-ins, clarification, and education throughout your treatment.

How to Get Involved

There’s no shame in needing medication. Just like insulin helps manage diabetes, psychiatric medications can help regulate brain chemistry, reduce suffering, and improve functioning. At River City Recovery, we view medication as one tool among many, a support that, when used responsibly and in combination with therapy and community, can create powerful momentum toward long-term recovery.

Whether you’ve never taken psychiatric medication before or you’ve had mixed experiences in the past, we’re here to help you explore your options with care, integrity, and professionalism.
