Individual Therapy

At the core of every successful recovery journey is one simple truth: people heal in relationship. While group therapy provides connection and community, individual therapy offers a space for deeper, personalized work, where trust is built, patterns are examined, and growth is anchored in a therapeutic relationship tailored to the individual.

At River City Recovery, individual therapy is not just an add-on. It’s a foundational component of every treatment plan, whether you’re in our PHP, IOP, or participating in outpatient services on a stand-alone basis. Our licensed therapists meet clients where they are, offering a private, supportive space to explore the personal challenges, traumas, and behaviors that fuel substance use and mental health struggles.

Why Individual Therapy Matters in Recovery

Substance use is often a symptom, not the root, of a problem or imbalance. Behind every addiction, there are stories, wounds, beliefs, and emotional patterns that need to be addressed for real recovery to take hold. Individual therapy provides the time and space to do that work.

Benefits of individual therapy include:

  • Uncovering the “why” behind substance use or compulsive behavior
  • Working through trauma or adverse life experiences
  • Developing emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Identifying cognitive distortions and replacing them with healthier beliefs
  • Addressing co-occurring mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or PTSD
  • Building a stronger sense of identity, confidence, and internal motivation
  • Creating a personal recovery plan based on your goals, values, and needs

In a one-on-one setting, clients are often able to explore sensitive issues they may not yet feel comfortable sharing in group settings. This private format allows for deeper insight, faster progress, and a more personalized therapeutic experience.

Evidence-Based, Human-Focused Care

Our therapists are trained in multiple modalities, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Trauma-informed therapy

Narrative therapy

Relapse prevention models

Attachment-based and psychodynamic approaches

But above all, our therapy is grounded in relationship. We believe that change doesn’t come from clinical theory alone; it comes from feeling safe enough to be honest, vulnerable, and seen. Our therapists are not distant observers; they are active, engaged partners in the work of recovery.

How Individual Therapy Fits Into Your Program

For clients in PHP or IOP:

In addition to group therapy, every IOP client receives:

  • You’ll be assigned a primary therapist who will meet with you regularly throughout your time in the program.
  • Sessions are scheduled weekly (at minimum), with additional sessions available based on clinical need.
  • Your therapist will collaborate with our medical team, group facilitators, and case managers to ensure continuity of care and aligned goals.

For stand-alone outpatient clients:

  • Individual therapy can be accessed independently from our full-day programming.
  • Many clients continue working with their primary therapist after completing PHP or IOP as part of their continuing care plan.
  • Frequency and duration of sessions are determined in collaboration with the client based on clinical needs and recovery milestones.

A Space for Clarity and Change

Therapy isn’t just about processing the past. It’s about shaping the future. Whether you’re addressing trauma, repairing relationships, learning new behaviors, or rediscovering your sense of self, individual therapy is a place to explore, experiment, and evolve.

At River City Recovery, we view each therapy session as a sacred space, where honesty is welcomed, progress is celebrated, and setbacks are treated as opportunities to learn. No shame. No perfection. Just a clear path forward, built one conversation at a time.
