Drug Testing and Monitoring

Accountability is a cornerstone of effective outpatient treatment. At River City Recovery, drug testing and monitoring are integrated into our program not as a punitive tool, but as a clinical support that fosters trust, transparency, and safety for both clients and the community they’re part of.

We understand that drug screening can bring up feelings of shame, fear, or resistance. That’s why we approach it differently. Our team views testing as an opportunity not to punish, but to gain insight, open up honest dialogue, and support recovery in a way that’s grounded in reality. For many clients, consistent monitoring becomes a powerful tool of motivation, accountability, and self-awareness.

Why Drug Testing Matters in Outpatient Care

In outpatient settings, clients have more freedom and flexibility compared to residential programs. While that flexibility is important, it also comes with increased exposure to triggers, stressors, and opportunities to relapse. Drug and alcohol screening provides structure and helps:

  • Monitor clinical progress in real time
  • Ensure safety within group settings
  • Identify early signs of relapse or return to use
  • Facilitate honest, data-informed conversations between clients and clinicians
  • Build external accountability for legal, professional, or family-related requirements
  • Support a culture of honesty and transparency across the program

Screening isn’t about catching people; it’s about keeping people on track and making sure no one falls through the cracks.

How Testing Works at River City Recovery

Our drug testing process is professional, respectful, and confidential. Clients are informed of our testing protocols during the admissions process, and results are handled with discretion.

Key elements include:

Regularly scheduled testing

based on level of care (PHP, IOP, or outpatient)

Randomized testing

to maintain clinical integrity and reduce predictability

Observed or monitored collection

to ensure accuracy when clinically necessary

Laboratory-confirmed testing

using third-party labs for accuracy and reliability

Immediate preliminary results

with rapid panels when needed for clinical decisions

Alcohol screening

via breathalyzer or urine ETG as appropriate

We screen for a wide range of substances, including but not limited to:

What Happens If a Client Tests Positive?

A positive drug test is not an automatic reason for discharge. In most cases, it’s a reason for conversation. Our clinical team takes a compassionate, case-by-case approach and considers factors such as:

Responses may include increased structure, a reassessment of level of care, individual sessions focused on relapse triggers, or, if necessary, referral to a higher level of care (e.g., detox or residential treatment).

We don’t shame people for struggling. But we do hold them accountable.

Legal, Professional, or External Monitoring Support

Many clients at River City Recovery are involved with outside systems that require documentation of abstinence, including:

We provide documentation and communication (with appropriate consent) to support those requirements, ensuring that clients can stay in compliance while maintaining the integrity of their clinical care.

A Supportive, Clinically Driven Process

We know that for drug testing to be effective, it must be consistent, objective, and connected to therapeutic goals. Our process is rooted in professionalism and compassion, not control or punishment. Clients are treated with respect, regardless of results, and are always supported in taking the next right step, whatever that may be.

At River City Recovery, testing is more than a policy. It’s a part of the therapeutic relationship. And like every aspect of our program, it’s here to help, not to harm.
